The 53rd Annual International African Arts Festival in Commodore Barry Park runs from July 4 through July 7.
The 53rd annual International African Arts Festival (IAAFestival) is set to take place at Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene from July 4 to July 7.
From a dedicated children’s play zone, captivating poetry, fashion shows and chess tournaments, there is something for everyone at this year’s festival, according to a news release.
Attendees can look forward to performances by Tanzanian Damian Soul; Cita Rodriguez; Fort Greene’s own Strafe, who will be performing his hit single “Set It Off”; Stanley Banks & Friends; Nigeria’s Dr. Felix, who will be offering the original Fela style Afrobeat; New Orleans artist Glen David Andrew and others.
The IAAFestival will also feature African dance performances each night that showcase the beauty and energy of traditional African dance styles.
There will also be numerous vendors offering a wide array of African-inspired goods and cuisine. From traditional crafts to delicious food, attendees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant colors, flavors and textures of African culture, according to the news release.
Additionally, the IAAFestival, in conjunction with the National Association of Kawaida Organizations (NAKO), will host the 35th Annual Symposium on Culture, Community and Struggle.
For children and families, Kuumba’s Children Corner will provide a safe space for families to create, learn and engage with their peers and the community.
From noon to 4pm on July 5 through July 7, Kuumba’s will host ART-TISM, where families will get to enjoy creating art and enhance skills such as gross/fine motor, color recognition, taking directions and communication. There will be a sensory station for self-soothing and over stimulation remedy.
The IAAFestival will take place at Commodore Barry Park, bordered by Navy Street, Park and Flushing Avenues, from 10am to 9pm, rain or shine. Admission is free for children up to 12, with requested daily donations for teens ($5) and adults ($10).
