KAMALA Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential running mate for the 2024 election. Walz, 60, is described as a plain-speaking Midwesterner with experience as a teacher, coach, and National Guard veteran. He’s seen as potentially appealing to rural voters.
The Harris-Walz ticket will face Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance in the November 5th election. Harris praised Walz as a “battle-tested leader” with a track record of accomplishments for Minnesota families.
Walz has pursued progressive policies as governor, including free school meals and climate change initiatives. He’s faced some criticism over his handling of protests following George Floyd’s death in 2020.
Former President Obama and Michelle Obama released a statement praising Harris’ choice, describing Walz as someone with the judgment, character and experience to serve as vice president. They highlighted his background in education, military service, and ability to connect with people.
The selection sets up a contest between two tickets with very different visions for the country’s future. Both sides are framing their opponents as out of touch with average Americans as the campaign heats up.
