THIS week, Africa gathers in Kenya for what is being hailed as the continent’s largest festival. The Festac Africa 2024, set to take place in Kisumu from August 25 to September 1, has confirmed over 7,000 delegates from 50 countries, promising a significant economic boost to Kenya and East Africa.
The event, a celebration of African heritage and sustainable growth, serves as a convergence point for diverse cultures and industries. It aims to showcase the continent’s uniqueness and identity while promoting intra-African trade and creating a global networking platform for businesses.
Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o has assured that the county is fully prepared to host this monumental event. Security measures have been enhanced, and preparations for conference and meeting venues have been finalized. The main venue, Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, will host 18 conference sessions, while other activities include sporting events, cultural performances, culinary arts exhibitions, and tourism opportunities.
The festival has attracted an impressive lineup of 200 keynote speakers, 100 performing artists, and 150 exhibitors from across the continent. Governor Nyong’o expressed confidence that this event will transform Kisumu, much like the Africities Summit did in 2022, which led to increased investments, tourism, and conferences in the region.
Originally scheduled for May, the event was postponed due to floods. Now, with the new dates set, the Lake Victoria Tourism Association is optimistic about a surge in hotel bookings as the event draws near. With a bed capacity of 10,000 in the region, they are well-prepared to accommodate the expected 7,000 guests.
Festac Africa chairman Yinka Abioye emphasizes the festival’s role in facilitating trade, networking, and cultural exchange among participants. The event also includes programs designed to educate children about African heritage and instil pride in their African identity.
As preparations reach their final stages, Kisumu and the broader East African region anticipate the economic and cultural impact of this landmark gathering, reinforcing Africa’s position on the global stage.
