Zambians Mourn Former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa


Zambia is in mourning following the death of former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa. Mrs. Mwanawasa, who was also a respected lawyer, was rushed to Maina Soko Military Hospital yesterday after a short illness and was admitted for treatment. Despite the medical team’s efforts, she passed away later that evening.


The heartbreaking news was confirmed by Stanley Kakubo, the family spokesperson, who expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the Mwanawasa and Kakubo families. “It is with the deepest and most profound sadness and sorrow that the Mwanawasa and Kakubo families announce the untimely passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, and former First Lady of the Republic of Zambia, Mrs. Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa. Mrs. Mwanawasa passed away this evening at Maina Soko Medical Centre after a short illness,” he stated.

In the wake of this loss, the family has announced that the funeral gathering will be held at her residence in Roma Park, Lusaka.

Maureen Mwanawasa was the widow of Levy Mwanawasa, the third President of Zambia, who served the nation from 2002 until his untimely death in 2008. Her passing marks a significant moment of reflection for the nation, which fondly remembers her contributions as First Lady.

President Hakainde Hichilema also confirmed the sad news in a heartfelt Facebook post, expressing his deep shock and sorrow. “It is with deep shock and sorrow that we have learned of the passing of the former First Lady, Mrs. Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa,” he said. The President urged the nation to come together in prayer and to support the Mwanawasa family during this difficult time.
